The American Diabetes Association cited diabetes as the 7th leading cause of death in the United States as of 2015. The disease continues to disproportionately affect people of color and disadvantaged communities. The best cure for diabetes is prevention, and health centers can play a crucial role in performing appropriate screening and treatment of adolescents for obesity and other pre-diabetic indicators. By harnessing a community and team-based approach to screening and treatment, health centers can empower patients and families with resources to combat the prevalence of diabetes nationwide. This learning collaborative, hosted in partnership with the School-Based Health Alliance (SBHA), outlined important steps to collaborate with schools and other partners to prevent diabetes among school-aged children. This learning collaborative ran from March to May of 2019.
