Understanding Stages of Change and Best Interventions for Substance Use Disorders

This session reviewed how nurses, nurse practitioners, and other providers support those with substance use disorders. A review of historical changes in how substance treatment has been provided from the abstinence model to harm reduction. An introduction on the basics of stages of change described by Prochaska and Diclemente (1983) and a review of how to intervene with appropriate interventions for specific stages of change was provided. Then we discussed basic motivational interviewing techniques that can be used to move individuals to a later stage of change.
