The Role of Health Centers in Reducing the Burden of Radon-Induced Lung Cancer: Part One

Jan 21, 2025  03:00 PM  EST

About the Training

NNCC and the National Center for Health in Public Housing (NCHPH) are partnering with HUD's Office on Healthy Housing and Lead Hazard Control to present a two-part webinar series on radon exposure and its impact on residents of public housing.

Radon - a colorless radioactive gas - poses significant health risks, particularly as a leading cause of lung cancer. Residents of public housing face unique environmental challenges due to structural vulnerabilities in older buildings, compounding existing health disparities and barriers to care.

Join speaker Brenda M. Reyes, MD, MPH, Director, Policy and Standards Division, for the Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes to explore the health risks of radon exposure and how health centers can implement impactful prevention and mitigation strategies. Discover how a public housing-focused health center successfully conducts radon testing, prevention, and patient education to protect vulnerable communities.

Registration is open.

This webinar will equip participants with the knowledge and strategies to incorporate radon screening and prevention into health services. By enhancing their understanding of radon risks, health center staff will be better positioned to effectively inform and assist their patients. Health centers can play a critical role in addressing radon-induced lung cancer in broader public health initiatives to reduce cancer rates and enhance community health.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understanding the link between radon exposure and lung cancer.
  • Identifying environmental and structural risks associated with older public housing.
  • Strategies for implementing radon screening in health center protocols.
  • Addressing health disparities and improving access to preventive care for public housing residents.
