NNCC signs letter to combat racism as a public health crisis

The National Nurse-Led Care Consortium (NNCC) signed a letter on January 8 to President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team urging him to immediately rescind Executive Order 13950 “Combatting Race and Sex Stereotyping” upon taking office. The executive order, which was signed by President Trump on September 22, 2020, prohibits federally funded programs from speaking to the effects of systemic racism.

Recognizing that racism is a public health crisis, NNCC has seen firsthand the detrimental effects this executive order has on protecting and improving our nation’s health. In a time of heightened awareness about the effects of systemic racism on health and health outcomes, we believe it is essential to continue to educate the healthcare workforce on continued injustices faced by people of color in the United States. The letter states, “the need to support systemic efforts to bolster diversity, equity and inclusion has never been greater. This EO presents a very real barrier to evidence-based diversity programs and equity-related initiatives across all federal agencies, their grantees and contractors.”

We look forward to President-elect Biden’s prompt reversal of this harmful policy.
