As the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is emerging as a serious public health problem in tandem with the opioid epidemic, health centers have the opportunity to decrease its impact with standardized screening, linkage to care and treatment protocols. This case study highlights how five health centers nationally are addressing the increased rates of HCV infection and its intersection with the opioid epidemic.

Iowa Department of Public Health will review current substance use disorder rates in Iowa and surveillance to eliminate HIV and HCV throughout the state. The Clinician Consultation Network of University of California San Francisco will review resources available for providers treating hepatitis and co-occurring substance use orders, such as the Warm Line for consultation of cases.

Public Health Management Corporation will explain the expansion of Medication-Assisted Therapy in Rising Sun Health Center and resources for organizations to increase provider capacity.
NNCC partnered with Philadelphia Department of Public Health and Jody Gilmore, MSN, CRNP, PPMC, from Prevention Point Philadelphia for this webinar. Gilmore reviewed harm reduction concepts, the infectious disease consequences of drug use, how to engage people who use drugs, as well as best practices, strategies, and resources for providers.
NNCC partnered with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and Hepatitis B Foundation to increase viral hepatitis education, screening and vaccination access, and enhanced treatment capacity for HepB in Philadelphia. During the presentation, we reviewed HepB epidemiology in Philadelphia, Department of Public Health Programming, HepB screening processes and resources, and vaccination schedules for HepB.

Ariel MacNeill and Bianca Taipe from the Nationalities Services Center, whose mission focuses on welcoming immigrants and refugees and connecting them to services in Philadelphia, PA, review cultural and self-humility as it relates to providing health care and social services to people coming from different cultural identities. The presenters also discuss trauma-informed practice and barriers that different populations face in accessing health care, as well as resources to address those barriers.

Dr. Eyob Feyssa reviewed hepatitis B virus knowledge and current epidemiological and behavioral risk trends for African and Caribbean immigrant populations. He provided recommendations based on guidelines for screening and treating patients with HBV infection, and he reviewed evidence of benefits from antiviral therapy and associated reduction of risks for liver cancer.
