Nurses on the front line share their insights on addressing vaccine hesitancy and lessons learned through COVID-19 while working with tribal communities. We hear on-the-ground strategies from Janet Reich, RN, MSHSA and Sausha Nells, RN, BSN, nurses on the Navajo reservation and Erin McCanlies, PhD, an epidemiologist who works on the Tribal Support Section in CDC.

In this session, we explored how to improve vaccine awareness and access among individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD). Our expert panel shared strategies to advocate for individuals with I/DD and highlighted on-the-ground approaches for equitable health care.
NNCC partnered with Philadelphia Department of Public Health and Jody Gilmore, MSN, CRNP, PPMC, from Prevention Point Philadelphia for this webinar. Gilmore reviewed harm reduction concepts, the infectious disease consequences of drug use, how to engage people who use drugs, as well as best practices, strategies, and resources for providers.
Deborah Washington, PhD, RN, and John Nguyen-Yap, MSW shared on-the-ground initiatives in BIPOC communities, including services that promote culturally competent care and successful Public Service Announcements. We also explored strategies to improve access to vaccine education and distribution among Asian American (AA), Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities.
Across the country, health centers and other community-based providers are tasked with supporting large scale COVID-19 vaccine rollouts for their patients and communities. This demand has expanded the workload of providers, staff, and volunteers. The National Nurse-Led Care Consortium, Public Health Management Corporation, and the Philadelphia Department of Health formed an innovative partnership to address this need by deploying AmeriCorps members to assist with vaccine delivery.
Dr. Kelly Wolgast, Director of the COVID-19 Operations Control Center at Pennsylvania State University, discussed developing protocols for COVID testing and response through universities. Dr. Wolgast has many years of executive nursing and healthcare leadership experience, and brings a unique perspective from serving 26 years on Active Duty in the United States Army as an Army Nurse and retiring as a Colonel.
