AmeriCorps Week 2025

Mar 14, 2025 | Nurse-Led Care News |

We are celebrating National AmeriCorps Week this week, March 9-15! At NNCC, our AmeriCorps programs place members at organizations across Philadelphia and Pennsylvania that work to eradicate poverty through direct community engagement and program management.

We have two paths to be involved with AmeriCorps. The AmeriCorps VISTA members serve for one year at nonprofit organizations and public agencies, where they support the expansion of community programming. The AmeriCorps Public Health Nursing Fellowship places members at community-based primary care and public health organizations, allowing them to develop the skills and cultural humility that will better prepare them for the public health nursing workforce.

Through these programs, NNCC has improved health outcomes for the communities around the city. Celebrate AmeriCorps Week with us and read about some of our current members below:

Elena Smith, AmeriCorps Vista

I have wanted to serve with AmeriCorps since learning about it years ago! I want to make a difference in my community and help people who are struggling with food insecurity. The times I have spent interacting with individuals at the community fridge have been so rewarding. It's also been a wonderful reminder of how much we can accomplish when we lean into community and teamwork.

Taylor Wise, Public Health Nursing Fellowship at Widener's Community Health Clinic

As a second-year AmeriCorps member participating in the Public Health Nursing Fellowship, I have had unique experiences learning about my community in depth and the interventions that create a healthy and involved community by providing accessible resources. In addition to community engagement, I enjoy collaborating with other members of this fellowship, sharing stories about our service sites, and spreading insight and ideas across the area.

Aissatou Diallo, Public Health Nursing Fellowship at HUP Harvest

I serve with AmeriCorps because I am passionate about making a direct, tangible impact on people’s lives through service. To me, serving with AmeriCorps contributes to the broader mission of community wellness and development. As a first-generation minority from Harlem, I have witnessed firsthand the health disparities and inequities that marginalized communities face. Seeing the impact that service has had on my own community inspires me to extend that same support to others.
Aissatou Diallo

Zarah Kayhan, AmeriCorps VISTA at PHMC Health Network

AmeriCorps service work aligns with my professional and personal goals to better the community I live in. I wanted to take steps to develop professionally while staying in alignment with my values of serving and uplifting vulnerable populations. The AmeriCorps VISTA program has allowed me to learn and grow as a professional and do meaningful work to combat poverty in the city in which I live.
