Kansas Passes Full Practice Authority for APRNs

Full Practice Authority, A Public Policy Blog by the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium

Governor Laura Kelly signed HB 2279 into law on Friday, making Kansas the 26th state to adopt full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). This legislation enables APRNs to administer the full scope of care they are trained and licensed to provide, without the extra burden of unnecessary red tape. NNCC applauds this advancement in Kansas, which also signifies that a majority of states and the District of Columbia now have full practice authority.

"Full practice authority is a key strategy to expanding access to care and addressing health inequities. We commend the state of Kansas on this bipartisan victory, which will help bring nurse-led models of care to underserved communities across the state."
Sarah Hexem Hubbard, Executive Director of the National Nurse-Led Care Consortium

Kansas is the second state in a week to enact full practice authority, with New York doing so on April 9. Taken together, the Republican- and Democrat-led states' movement on this issue illustrate the importance of this commonsense reform on either side of the political aisle.

Massachusetts and Delaware also adopted full practice authority in 2021, and grassroots advocacy efforts continue in several other states. This momentum will continue to expand access to affordable, quality care across the country for patients who need it the most.

Twenty-four states continue to uphold unnecessary barriers to high quality, nurse-led care. Please visit our advocacy page for more information on the fight for full practice authority in legislatures across the country.
